The Pisces-Rooster, known as the Seagull, is a dreamer with excellent survival instincts and no volume control. Pisces brings the sea, imagination, and an emotional weather system. The Rooster brings noise, pride, and a sharp eye for exactly what is going on. The result is someone loud, adaptable, and considerably cleverer than the seaside reputation implies. Gulls drink seawater. Glands above the eyes strip out the salt and drip concentrated brine from the nostrils, so a bird stranded miles offshore is fine. They read human behaviour closely enough to know which hand holds the food and to time a raid to the second, and they thrive in cities that have driven out almost everything else. Pisces-Roosters are opportunistic, vocal, and much more sensitive underneath than they let on. They adapt to any coast, make themselves heard, and can extract a living out of the least promising circumstances. They are also easily wounded and inclined to answer hurt with noise. The risk is the reputation: a talent for taking what is available, exercised without much subtlety, and a genuine confusion about why people find it grating. The name fits because a gull turns seawater into fresh water inside its own head, imitates rain to summon dinner, and is dismissed as a nuisance by everyone it has out-thought.

Pisces
“Two fish, one cord, and they are swimming apart.”
Pisces is mutable water ruled by Neptune, the last sign, and it inherits something from all eleven before it. The boundary between itself and everyone else is thin to the point of not being there, which produces real empathy, real imagination, and a tendency to absorb whatever is in the room and mistake it for weather of its own. It is the most artistic sign and the most porous. The constellation is two fish tied together by a cord, and the knot is the whole point. Aphrodite and Eros, fleeing Typhon, took fish form and bound themselves so they could not be separated in the water, which is why the two fish are always drawn swimming in opposite directions with the tie still holding. The star at the knot is called Alrescha, the cord. The sign is also where the sun now sits at the spring equinox, having drifted there over two thousand years, so the year quietly begins in Pisces while every chart still calls that point Aries. A Pisces is the one who understood what you meant rather than what you said, who makes things, who forgives faster than is sensible. The Rooster is precision, pride and an announcing voice. It notices the detail, keeps to the time, and says what it has concluded without much cushioning, which makes it invaluable and occasionally exhausting. It takes real satisfaction in a job done properly and real offence at the suggestion that it was not. Its part in the race is usually told as a footnote and deserves better. Three animals were stuck at the river with no way over, and it was the Rooster who spotted the raft. The Monkey and the Goat did the clearing and the poling, and all three crossed together, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth. The Rooster came last of the three, having found the thing that got all of them there. That is the sign in miniature: the one who sees what everybody else walked past, contributes the observation that makes the plan possible, and ends up behind the animals who carried it out. Rooster people are well organised, exacting and more sensitive to criticism than their confidence suggests. They are loyal, punctual, and honest to a fault about other people's work as well as their own. The cost is the volume: being right is not the same as being easy to hear, and the observation that saves the day still lands as a correction to whoever is receiving it.
