Eel

“Nobody has ever seen where it goes at the end.”

The Eel is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Pisces born in the Year of the Snake, the point where the Pisces sun meets the Snake moon.

The Pisces-Snake, known as the Eel, is the deepest mystery on the wheel. Pisces brings intuition, imagination, and a private inner ocean. The Snake brings secrecy, patience, and a strategy nobody is shown. Together they make someone quiet, perceptive, and fundamentally unknowable to almost everyone who meets them. The European eel confounded natural history for two thousand years. Aristotle concluded eels had no parents and formed out of mud, because nobody could find an egg or a young one, and Freud spent a summer dissecting hundreds looking for reproductive organs without success. We now know they are born in the Sargasso Sea and travel four thousand miles to European rivers, then transform for the return trip: the body changes colour, the eyes enlarge for deep water, the gut dissolves because it will never eat again. No one has ever witnessed them spawn. Pisces-Snakes are watchful, self-contained, and capable of enormous journeys that nobody around them realises are underway. They form deep attachments and disclose very little. The risk is the dissolved gut: an ability to give up everything ordinary for one final private purpose, and to tell no one what it is until it is far too late to come with them. The name fits because an eel spends its life in fresh water and its meaning somewhere in the middle of an ocean. Everything visible about it is the journey, and the destination has stayed a secret from every person who has ever looked.

Pisces

“Two fish, one cord, and they are swimming apart.”

Pisces is mutable water ruled by Neptune, the last sign, and it inherits something from all eleven before it. The boundary between itself and everyone else is thin to the point of not being there, which produces real empathy, real imagination, and a tendency to absorb whatever is in the room and mistake it for weather of its own. It is the most artistic sign and the most porous. The constellation is two fish tied together by a cord, and the knot is the whole point. Aphrodite and Eros, fleeing Typhon, took fish form and bound themselves so they could not be separated in the water, which is why the two fish are always drawn swimming in opposite directions with the tie still holding. The star at the knot is called Alrescha, the cord. The sign is also where the sun now sits at the spring equinox, having drifted there over two thousand years, so the year quietly begins in Pisces while every chart still calls that point Aries. A Pisces is the one who understood what you meant rather than what you said, who makes things, who forgives faster than is sensible. They are intuitive, funny in an oblique way, and much tougher than the softness suggests. The cost is the cord: pulled in two directions at once, giving until there is nothing to give, and escaping into something, work or fantasy or a person, rather than saying no.

Snake

“Crossed hidden in a hoof, and stepped out ahead.”

The Snake is intuition, patience and strategy held entirely in private. It watches longer than anyone realises, reaches a conclusion without discussing it, and acts once rather than repeatedly. Elegant, self-contained and difficult to read, it is the sign least interested in explaining itself and most likely to have been right. Its crossing was pure method. Unable to outswim the field, the Snake coiled itself around the Horse's hoof and rode the whole distance concealed, expending almost nothing. At the far bank, just as the Horse was about to step onto dry land in sixth place, the Snake slid out in front of it. The Horse shied at the sudden movement, and by the time it recovered the Snake had taken the position and the Horse had lost it. Sixth and seventh in the calendar were settled by an animal that was never once seen during the race. Snake people are perceptive, composed and quietly ambitious. They keep confidences absolutely, form few but deep attachments, and rarely reveal their reasoning even to people who would have agreed with it. The cost is the concealment: a decision arrived at alone and revealed only once it is final, which can leave the people closest to them realising that a long process was underway and nobody thought to tell them.

Zodiac Interplay

Polarity: Starlight

Still water, and a very long way down.

You feel the weather in a room before a word is spoken. Where others see events, you see undercurrents - the pause before the answer, the thing said too brightly. It makes you the person everyone tells the truth to, eventually.

Modality and Direction: Monsoon

You arrive with the weather.

Fluid energy carrying southern feeling. You move with the emotional current of a room rather than against it, which is why you can shift an atmosphere that resisted everyone else's effort - you did not push, you flooded.

Elemental Cycle: Geyser

Still ground, then suddenly a hundred feet of water.

Solar water over lunar fire. Everything builds underground with you - the feeling, the pressure, the conviction - and then it arrives all at once, with a force that surprises people who mistook calm for absence.

Overcoming. Water checks fire. Your Pisces half sets the limit and your Snake half works inside it.
