The Pisces-Ox, known as the Manatee, is gentleness with real weight to it. Pisces brings softness, feeling, and a life lived in warm shallow water. The Ox brings size, patience, and steady endurance. Together they make someone large-hearted and unhurried, entirely without aggression and much harder to move than anyone expects. Manatees weigh half a tonne, have no natural predators, and eat nothing but seagrass, up to a tenth of their body weight a day. Their closest living relative is the elephant, which is visible in the face once you know. Sailors mistook them for mermaids, and Columbus recorded the sighting with some disappointment. Their one real vulnerability is cold: with so little fat and so slow a metabolism, they must find warm water in winter or they simply cannot survive it. Pisces-Oxen are calm, generous, and quietly immovable on the few things they care about. They give people the benefit of the doubt long past the point where it is deserved, and they carry a great deal without complaint. The risk is the cold: this nature does badly in hostile environments, and unlike tougher animals it cannot simply harden. It has to leave for warmer water, and it usually waits too long. The name fits because a manatee is proof that size and softness are not opposites. It grazes peacefully, threatens nothing, and needs warmth the way other animals need armour.

Pisces
“Two fish, one cord, and they are swimming apart.”
Pisces is mutable water ruled by Neptune, the last sign, and it inherits something from all eleven before it. The boundary between itself and everyone else is thin to the point of not being there, which produces real empathy, real imagination, and a tendency to absorb whatever is in the room and mistake it for weather of its own. It is the most artistic sign and the most porous. The constellation is two fish tied together by a cord, and the knot is the whole point. Aphrodite and Eros, fleeing Typhon, took fish form and bound themselves so they could not be separated in the water, which is why the two fish are always drawn swimming in opposite directions with the tie still holding. The star at the knot is called Alrescha, the cord. The sign is also where the sun now sits at the spring equinox, having drifted there over two thousand years, so the year quietly begins in Pisces while every chart still calls that point Aries. A Pisces is the one who understood what you meant rather than what you said, who makes things, who forgives faster than is sensible. They are intuitive, funny in an oblique way, and much tougher than the softness suggests. The Ox is endurance, honesty and unglamorous strength. It is the sign that does the work while other people are still describing it, holds a position for years without needing anyone to agree, and treats a promise as a fact about the world rather than an intention. Nothing about it is quick and nothing about it gives way. In the race for the calendar, the Ox was the strongest swimmer and the obvious favourite, and it spent the entire crossing with the Rat riding on its head, having agreed to the arrangement without much thought. At the far bank the Rat jumped and took first place. The Ox came second. What the story never records is any complaint about it, and that omission is the sign in one detail: the animal that did the actual carrying, was outmanoeuvred at the last moment, and simply took its place and got on with the next four thousand years of ploughing. Ox people are dependable to the point of being taken for granted. They are patient, physically capable, slow to anger and immovable once settled. They are the ones still standing after the hard year. The cost is silence: they absorb far more than they report, they will carry a load that was never theirs rather than renegotiate it, and the resentment, when it finally surfaces, has usually been building for a very long time.
