It is the sign that does the work while other people are still describing it, holds a position for years without needing anyone to agree, and treats a promise as a fact about the world rather than an intention. Nothing about it is quick and nothing about it gives way. In the race for the calendar, the Ox was the strongest swimmer and the obvious favourite, and it spent the entire crossing with the Rat riding on its head, having agreed to the arrangement without much thought. At the far bank the Rat jumped and took first place. The Ox came second. What the story never records is any complaint about it, and that omission is the sign in one detail: the animal that did the actual carrying, was outmanoeuvred at the last moment, and simply took its place and got on with the next four thousand years of ploughing.
