The Aquarius-Ox, known as the Hippo, is a reformer with the patience to actually finish. Aquarius brings the idea that things should be different and a stubborn independence about saying so. The Ox brings endurance, reliability, and a refusal to be hurried. Most people who want to change something run out of stamina. This combination does not. Hippos look comfortable and are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They cannot swim so much as walk along the riverbed, holding their breath for five minutes at a time, and they can outrun a human over short ground despite weighing as much as a small car. Aquarius is fixed air ruled by Uranus, which makes it the most reliably contrary sign in the zodiac: attached to its principles with total inflexibility, and attached to almost nothing else. It thinks in systems and populations rather than individuals, it is drawn to whatever the accepted arrangement has excluded, and it can be warm with everyone while remaining slightly outside the group. The most useful thing to know about it is the thing that confuses everyone. The water bearer is an air sign, and it is not a contradiction: the figure is Ganymede, carried up to Olympus to pour for the gods, and what matters is not the water but the pouring. Air distributes. The Ox is endurance, honesty and unglamorous strength. It is the sign that does the work while other people are still describing it, holds a position for years without needing anyone to agree, and treats a promise as a fact about the world rather than an intention. Nothing about it is quick and nothing about it gives way. In the race for the calendar, the Ox was the strongest swimmer and the obvious favourite, and it spent the entire crossing with the Rat riding on its head, having agreed to the arrangement without much thought. At the far bank the Rat jumped and took first place. The Ox came second. What the story never records is any complaint about it, and that omission is the sign in one detail: the animal that did the actual carrying, was outmanoeuvred at the last moment, and simply took its place and got on with the next four thousand years of ploughing. Ox people are dependable to the point of being taken for granted. They are patient, physically capable, slow to anger and immovable once settled. They are the ones still standing after the hard year.
