Goldfish

“Remembers everything, and grows to the size of the bowl.”

The Goldfish is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Pisces born in the Year of the Rabbit, the point where the Pisces sun meets the Rabbit moon.

The Pisces-Rabbit, known as the Goldfish, is gentle, decorative, and consistently underestimated. Pisces brings imagination, sensitivity, and a dislike of hard edges. The Rabbit brings refinement, tact, and a preference for a calm domestic life. Together they make someone lovely to have around whose inner life is far larger than the container they are usually given. The three second memory is a myth, and a well tested one. Goldfish learn routines, recognise the people who feed them, remember trained tasks for months, and can be taught to push levers at particular times of day. They are carp, bred for colour in China for over a thousand years, and in a pond rather than a bowl they can reach a foot in length and live for decades. The small dull fish is not the animal. It is the enclosure. Pisces-Rabbits are kind, artistic, and easily contained by other people's expectations. They adapt to whatever space they are put in, which is a talent and a trap, and they remember every slight and every kindness with a precision nobody credits them with. The risk is the bowl: a life shaped entirely to fit a modest setting, when the same animal in open water would have been something else. The name fits because a goldfish is a thousand years of careful breeding, a long memory and real capacity for growth, all of it sitting in whatever container it was handed and being called forgetful.

Pisces

“Two fish, one cord, and they are swimming apart.”

Pisces is mutable water ruled by Neptune, the last sign, and it inherits something from all eleven before it. The boundary between itself and everyone else is thin to the point of not being there, which produces real empathy, real imagination, and a tendency to absorb whatever is in the room and mistake it for weather of its own. It is the most artistic sign and the most porous. The constellation is two fish tied together by a cord, and the knot is the whole point. Aphrodite and Eros, fleeing Typhon, took fish form and bound themselves so they could not be separated in the water, which is why the two fish are always drawn swimming in opposite directions with the tie still holding. The star at the knot is called Alrescha, the cord. The sign is also where the sun now sits at the spring equinox, having drifted there over two thousand years, so the year quietly begins in Pisces while every chart still calls that point Aries. A Pisces is the one who understood what you meant rather than what you said, who makes things, who forgives faster than is sensible. They are intuitive, funny in an oblique way, and much tougher than the softness suggests. The cost is the cord: pulled in two directions at once, giving until there is nothing to give, and escaping into something, work or fantasy or a person, rather than saying no.

Rabbit

“Crossed on stepping stones, and got lucky at the right moment.”

The Rabbit is tact, refinement and a strong preference for avoiding trouble rather than winning it. It reads a room accurately, softens what needs softening, and keeps its life arranged so that confrontation rarely becomes necessary. Underneath the gentleness there is a great deal of quiet firmness, which people usually discover late. Its crossing was the least heroic and one of the most successful. The Rabbit could not swim, so it went by stepping stones, hopping from one to the next, and partway across it slipped. What saved it was a floating log, which it scrambled onto and rode, and which the Dragon obligingly blew toward the far bank. It came fourth. No strength, no strategy worth the name, just lightness, nerve at the moment of the slip, and the good fortune that tends to attach itself to animals that stay alert. In China the Rabbit is also the one on the moon, pounding the elixir of immortality, which is a rather grander posting than fourth place suggests. Rabbit people are diplomatic, aesthetically particular, and excellent company. They dislike raised voices and are surprisingly hard to move once they have decided something quietly. The cost is avoidance: a problem left unnamed to keep the peace, sitting there getting larger, while the room congratulates itself on how pleasant everything is.

Zodiac Interplay

Polarity: Starlight

Still water, and a very long way down.

You feel the weather in a room before a word is spoken. Where others see events, you see undercurrents - the pause before the answer, the thing said too brightly. It makes you the person everyone tells the truth to, eventually.

Modality and Direction: Wayfarer

Every door is a door worth opening.

Adaptable energy pointed east toward growth. You are congenitally curious and constitutionally unfinished - you collect skills, places and people the way others collect certainty, and it makes you excellent company.

Elemental Cycle: Mangrove

Rooted in the tide, and holding the whole coastline together.

Solar water feeding lunar wood. You grow where conditions are difficult and unstable, and what you build there ends up sheltering everything else - the quiet, essential species.

Generating. Water feeds wood. Your Pisces half is the fuel and your Rabbit half is what it becomes.
