The Taurus-Rabbit, known as the Walrus, is bulk with unexpectedly fine perception. Taurus brings comfort, patience, and physical presence. They rest in huge piles on the ice, hundreds of animals pressed together for warmth, and they can inflate pouches in the throat to sleep upright in the sea without drowning. Taurus-Rabbits are affectionate, sociable, and highly attuned to texture, taste and atmosphere. They like crowds of people they know, they are slow to take offence, and they notice detail that nobody expects them to catch. The risk is the haul-out: this nature depends on the group being warm, and a cold season in the herd is felt far more sharply than the thick skin suggests. The name fits because a walrus is a very large animal that gets through life by touch and by company. It hauls its own weight up onto the ice with its teeth, then sleeps in a warm heap of everyone it knows.

Taurus is fixed earth ruled by Venus, which is a strange and useful pairing: the planet of pleasure attached to the sign least willing to be hurried. Taurus builds things meant to last, values comfort without apology, and takes a long time to change its mind precisely because it took a long time to make it up. Once settled, it does not move for argument, fashion or pressure. This is one of the oldest constellations we have. The V of the Hyades makes the bull's face and the red giant Aldebaran is its eye, with the Pleiades riding on its shoulder, and people were tracking that group before writing existed. A panel in the caves at Lascaux, painted around seventeen thousand years ago, shows a bull with a cluster of dots above it that lines up uncomfortably well with the Pleiades. Whether or not it was meant as a star map, humans have been looking at this animal in this sky for longer than almost anything else in the zodiac. A Taurus is the person who still has the good knives, the long friendship, the job they have quietly been excellent at for a decade. They are sensual, patient and reassuring, and their anger arrives late and lasts. The cost is inertia: comfort maintained past the point where it has become a rut, and a stubbornness that will defend a position long after the reason for it has gone.

The Rabbit is tact, refinement and a strong preference for avoiding trouble rather than winning it. It reads a room accurately, softens what needs softening, and keeps its life arranged so that confrontation rarely becomes necessary. Underneath the gentleness there is a great deal of quiet firmness, which people usually discover late. Its crossing was the least heroic and one of the most successful. The Rabbit could not swim, so it went by stepping stones, hopping from one to the next, and partway across it slipped. What saved it was a floating log, which it scrambled onto and rode, and which the Dragon obligingly blew toward the far bank. It came fourth. No strength, no strategy worth the name, just lightness, nerve at the moment of the slip, and the good fortune that tends to attach itself to animals that stay alert. In China the Rabbit is also the one on the moon, pounding the elixir of immortality, which is a rather grander posting than fourth place suggests. Rabbit people are diplomatic, aesthetically particular, and excellent company. They dislike raised voices and are surprisingly hard to move once they have decided something quietly. The cost is avoidance: a problem left unnamed to keep the peace, sitting there getting larger, while the room congratulates itself on how pleasant everything is.
