Groundhog
“Reliable enough that a whole country checks on it.”
The Groundhog is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Taurus born in the Year of the Dog, the point where the Taurus sun meets the Dog moon.
The Taurus-Dog, known as the Groundhog, is dependability turned into a way of living. Taurus brings patience, comfort, and a deep attachment to home ground. The Dog brings loyalty, honesty, and a sense of duty that does not need supervising. Together they make someone steady, domestic, and quietly essential to everyone around them. A groundhog is a true hibernator, and the numbers are extreme: body temperature falling from thirty seven degrees to about five, heart rate down to five beats a minute, breathing once every few minutes for months. It digs burrows running dozens of feet with separate chambers for sleeping, for nursery, and for waste, moving a tonne of soil to build one. And every February a country's worth of people gather to watch one emerge, because it is the animal we chose to be our marker of the turning year. Taurus-Dogs build a life and then maintain it properly. They keep the house, the friendships and the promises in good repair, they resist change on principle, and they are almost impossible to dislodge from a position they have settled into. The risk is the burrow: comfort and routine so well constructed that a decade passes inside it without a single deliberate decision. The name fits because a groundhog is an unglamorous animal that digs a serious home, sleeps through the worst of the year, and comes out on schedule. We built a holiday around its reliability, which says everything.

Taurus
“Slow to start, and then genuinely immovable.”
Taurus is fixed earth ruled by Venus, which is a strange and useful pairing: the planet of pleasure attached to the sign least willing to be hurried. Taurus builds things meant to last, values comfort without apology, and takes a long time to change its mind precisely because it took a long time to make it up. Once settled, it does not move for argument, fashion or pressure. This is one of the oldest constellations we have. The V of the Hyades makes the bull's face and the red giant Aldebaran is its eye, with the Pleiades riding on its shoulder, and people were tracking that group before writing existed. A panel in the caves at Lascaux, painted around seventeen thousand years ago, shows a bull with a cluster of dots above it that lines up uncomfortably well with the Pleiades. Whether or not it was meant as a star map, humans have been looking at this animal in this sky for longer than almost anything else in the zodiac. A Taurus is the person who still has the good knives, the long friendship, the job they have quietly been excellent at for a decade. They are sensual, patient and reassuring, and their anger arrives late and lasts. The cost is inertia: comfort maintained past the point where it has become a rut, and a stubbornness that will defend a position long after the reason for it has gone.

Dog
“Best swimmer in the race, and stopped for a wash.”
The Dog is loyalty, honesty and a working sense of justice. It defends the people it has taken on, says the awkward true thing rather than the comfortable one, and holds a standard of fairness that it applies to itself first. Anxious under the surface, steady on it, and almost impossible to buy. Its finish is the funniest result in the story and the most revealing. The Dog was the strongest swimmer in the field and should have placed near the front. Instead it treated the river as the best water it had seen in weeks, stopped partway to bathe and play, and wandered in eleventh, second to last, having beaten almost nobody. The Jade Emperor asked what had happened, and the answer amounted to the river being too good to hurry through. Nothing about it was laziness. The Dog simply did not think winning was the point of a river. Dog people are the friends who turn up, defend the absent, and remember who was kind. They are principled, funny, and quietly worried about more things than they let on. The cost is the distraction on the crossing: a nature that will not optimise its own position, and that watches less deserving people finish ahead of it with a mixture of genuine indifference and a grievance it insists it does not have.

Zodiac Interplay
Polarity: Moonrise
Quiet on the surface, engine running underneath.
You do not announce things. You go away, think it through, come back with it finished, and let the work do the talking. People tend to underestimate you exactly once - usually right before you hand them something they could not have built.
Modality and Direction: Whetstone
You do not chase new. You sharpen what is already here.
Fixed persistence honed by western precision. Where others reach for a new approach, you take the current one apart, find the dull edge, and fix it - again, and then again, until it is genuinely excellent.
Elemental Cycle: Bedrock
What everything else is built on.
Earth doubled, with no counterweight. You are the fixed point in other people's changing lives - the one whose word means the same thing in a crisis as it did on an ordinary Tuesday.
Resonant. Earth meets earth: one phase, doubled. Neither half tempers the other. There is nothing in this sign pulling the opposite way.
