The Taurus-Rooster, known as the Beetle, is method and armour in equal measure. Taurus brings persistence, physicality, and an attachment to the solid and the real. Ancient Egypt watched the same insect roll its sphere and made it the symbol of the sun's daily rebirth. Taurus-Roosters are reliable, well organised, and particular about standards in a way colleagues either rely on or resent. They finish things, protect what they have built, and take criticism of the work as criticism of themselves. The risk is the shell: precision and armour together make for someone very difficult to correct. The name fits because the beetle is proof that the humble, armoured, repetitive approach beats everything else in the long run. It does the least admired job in nature, and it steers by the galaxy to do it.

Taurus
“Slow to start, and then genuinely immovable.”
Taurus is fixed earth ruled by Venus, which is a strange and useful pairing: the planet of pleasure attached to the sign least willing to be hurried. Taurus builds things meant to last, values comfort without apology, and takes a long time to change its mind precisely because it took a long time to make it up. Once settled, it does not move for argument, fashion or pressure. This is one of the oldest constellations we have. The V of the Hyades makes the bull's face and the red giant Aldebaran is its eye, with the Pleiades riding on its shoulder, and people were tracking that group before writing existed. A panel in the caves at Lascaux, painted around seventeen thousand years ago, shows a bull with a cluster of dots above it that lines up uncomfortably well with the Pleiades. Whether or not it was meant as a star map, humans have been looking at this animal in this sky for longer than almost anything else in the zodiac. A Taurus is the person who still has the good knives, the long friendship, the job they have quietly been excellent at for a decade. They are sensual, patient and reassuring, and their anger arrives late and lasts. The cost is inertia: comfort maintained past the point where it has become a rut, and a stubbornness that will defend a position long after the reason for it has gone.

Rooster

The Rooster is precision, pride and an announcing voice. It notices the detail, keeps to the time, and says what it has concluded without much cushioning, which makes it invaluable and occasionally exhausting. It takes real satisfaction in a job done properly and real offence at the suggestion that it was not. Its part in the race is usually told as a footnote and deserves better. Three animals were stuck at the river with no way over, and it was the Rooster who spotted the raft. The Monkey and the Goat did the clearing and the poling, and all three crossed together, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth. The Rooster came last of the three, having found the thing that got all of them there. That is the sign in miniature: the one who sees what everybody else walked past, contributes the observation that makes the plan possible, and ends up behind the animals who carried it out. Rooster people are well organised, exacting and more sensitive to criticism than their confidence suggests. They are loyal, punctual, and honest to a fault about other people's work as well as their own. The cost is the volume: being right is not the same as being easy to hear, and the observation that saves the day still lands as a correction to whoever is receiving it.
