Wasp

“Precise, unloved, and it can sting as often as it likes.”

The Wasp is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Scorpio born in the Year of the Rooster, the point where the Scorpio sun meets the Rooster moon.

The Scorpio-Rooster, known as the Wasp, is exacting and entirely unsentimental about it. Scorpio brings intensity, control, and a memory for exactly who did what. The Rooster brings precision, pride, and no patience for sloppiness. Together they make someone sharp, capable, and perfectly comfortable being the least popular person in a room that is now working properly. Unlike a bee, a wasp's sting is smooth. It can be used repeatedly and the animal walks away each time. Paper wasps invented paper long before we did, chewing wood fibre into pulp and building nests of hexagonal cells out of it, which is where we got the idea. And fig wasps run one of the tightest arrangements in nature: almost every species of fig depends on its own species of wasp to pollinate it, and neither survives without the other. Scorpio-Roosters build things that hold, notice every flaw, and say so without much cushioning. They are loyal in a demanding way and generous with people who meet the standard. The risk is the repeatable sting: nothing physically stops them from making the same point again, harder, and they often do, long after the point was taken. The name fits because a wasp is an architect and a pollinator with a bad reputation earned honestly. It builds beautifully, it holds an entire ecosystem together, and it has never once considered being liked.

Scorpio

“All or nothing, and it decided which some time ago.”

Scorpio is fixed water ruled by Pluto, and it is the sign of depth in the literal sense: what is underneath, what is not being said, what people do when they think nobody is reading them. It is intense by default rather than by choice, loyal to very few, and constitutionally incapable of the middle setting on anything that matters. Its constellation carries the sky's most explicit grudge. Orion boasted he could kill every animal on earth, and a scorpion was sent to stop him, and it did. The two were placed at opposite ends of the heavens so they can never appear together: as Scorpius rises in the south, Orion is already setting in the west, still fleeing after several thousand years. The scorpion's heart is Antares, a red supergiant whose name means the rival of Mars, because it burns the same colour as the war planet and refuses to be mistaken for anything lesser. A Scorpio reads people accurately and says almost none of it out loud. They keep confidences absolutely, commit totally when they commit at all, and are excellent in a crisis because intensity is their resting state. The cost is the memory: this sign does not simply recall a betrayal, it files it, and the door that closes afterwards is not the kind that reopens because someone apologised well.

Rooster

“Spotted the raft, said so loudly, and got everyone across.”

The Rooster is precision, pride and an announcing voice. It notices the detail, keeps to the time, and says what it has concluded without much cushioning, which makes it invaluable and occasionally exhausting. It takes real satisfaction in a job done properly and real offence at the suggestion that it was not. Its part in the race is usually told as a footnote and deserves better. Three animals were stuck at the river with no way over, and it was the Rooster who spotted the raft. The Monkey and the Goat did the clearing and the poling, and all three crossed together, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth. The Rooster came last of the three, having found the thing that got all of them there. That is the sign in miniature: the one who sees what everybody else walked past, contributes the observation that makes the plan possible, and ends up behind the animals who carried it out. Rooster people are well organised, exacting and more sensitive to criticism than their confidence suggests. They are loyal, punctual, and honest to a fault about other people's work as well as their own. The cost is the volume: being right is not the same as being easy to hear, and the observation that saves the day still lands as a correction to whoever is receiving it.

Zodiac Interplay

Polarity: Starlight

Still water, and a very long way down.

You feel the weather in a room before a word is spoken. Where others see events, you see undercurrents - the pause before the answer, the thing said too brightly. It makes you the person everyone tells the truth to, eventually.

Modality and Direction: Whetstone

You do not chase new. You sharpen what is already here.

Fixed persistence honed by western precision. Where others reach for a new approach, you take the current one apart, find the dull edge, and fix it - again, and then again, until it is genuinely excellent.

Elemental Cycle: Chalice

Deep feeling, held in a shape that does not spill.

Solar water contained by lunar metal. You feel enormously and you have built the vessel to carry it, which is why people bring you the heavy things: they can tell you will not drop them.

Generating. Metal feeds water. Your Rooster half is the fuel and your Scorpio half is what it becomes.
