The Cancer-Rabbit, known as the Hedgehog, is tenderness with a defensive reflex it did not choose. Cancer brings feeling, attachment, and an automatic guard. The Rabbit brings gentleness, tact, and a strong dislike of conflict. Together they make someone kind, domestic, and capable of vanishing into a defensive position faster than the conversation can follow. A hedgehog carries about five thousand spines, each a modified hair, and rolls into a ball using a muscle that runs around the edge of its body like a drawstring. The spines are not thrown or used to attack anything. They exist entirely so the animal can stop participating. It also does something no one has fully explained: on meeting a strong new smell it works itself into a froth and spreads its own saliva over its spines, absorbing the strange thing into its defences. Cancer-Rabbits are considerate, easily hurt, and much braver than they look about the things that matter to them. They keep a small warm circle, avoid raised voices, and give more thought to other people's comfort than to their own. The risk is that curling up is involuntary: the ball closes at criticism they would rather have discussed, and by the time it opens the moment for discussing it is gone. The name fits because a hedgehog is not armed, it is closed. Every spine on it exists to protect something soft that intends nobody any harm and would rather the argument had never started.

Cancer

Cancer is cardinal water ruled by the Moon, which means an initiating sign running on tides. It leads by looking after: making the home, holding the family, remembering what everyone needs and when. The shell is real and so is what it protects, and the two get confused by people who have only met the closed version. The constellation has the humblest origin story in the zodiac. During Heracles' fight with the hydra, Hera sent a crab to distract him, and it did what a crab could do, which was grip his foot until he crushed it. It never stood a chance and it went in anyway, and Hera set it in the sky for the attempt rather than the result. Fittingly it is the faintest constellation of the twelve, with no bright star at all, and the best thing in it is a cluster the ancients called the Manger, a soft smudge of a thousand stars that most people never notice. A Cancer is the one who notices you have gone quiet, keeps the traditions going, and turns up when things are bad. They hold grudges the way they hold everything else, carefully and for a long time. The Rabbit is tact, refinement and a strong preference for avoiding trouble rather than winning it. It reads a room accurately, softens what needs softening, and keeps its life arranged so that confrontation rarely becomes necessary. Underneath the gentleness there is a great deal of quiet firmness, which people usually discover late. Its crossing was the least heroic and one of the most successful. The Rabbit could not swim, so it went by stepping stones, hopping from one to the next, and partway across it slipped. What saved it was a floating log, which it scrambled onto and rode, and which the Dragon obligingly blew toward the far bank. It came fourth. No strength, no strategy worth the name, just lightness, nerve at the moment of the slip, and the good fortune that tends to attach itself to animals that stay alert. In China the Rabbit is also the one on the moon, pounding the elixir of immortality, which is a rather grander posting than fourth place suggests. Rabbit people are diplomatic, aesthetically particular, and excellent company. They dislike raised voices and are surprisingly hard to move once they have decided something quietly. The cost is avoidance: a problem left unnamed to keep the peace, sitting there getting larger, while the room congratulates itself on how pleasant everything is.
