The Cancer-Dragon, known as the Lobster, is pride built around a tender centre. Cancer brings emotional depth and a hard protective outer layer. The Dragon brings ambition, presence, and a refusal to be small about anything. The result is someone who appears armoured and formidable, and whose armour is the only thing standing between the world and a great deal of feeling. A lobster cannot grow inside its shell. To get larger it has to walk out of the old one entirely, and for days afterwards it is soft, defenceless, and hiding under a rock. It does this dozens of times across a life that can run past a century, it can regrow a lost claw, and it shows so little decline with age that biologists use it as a standard example of an animal that does not visibly get old. Every increase in size was preceded by total vulnerability. Cancer-Dragons are impressive and protective, the ones who host the family, defend the reputation, and carry the ambitions of people who never asked them to. They are proud, easily wounded, and unlikely to admit either. The risk is refusing the moult: staying in a shell that fits because being briefly soft in front of witnesses feels worse than staying exactly this size forever. The name fits because a lobster is a dragon that lives on the seabed and keeps its treasure inside itself. All that armour, all that longevity, and none of it possible without periodically giving the whole thing up.

Cancer

Cancer is cardinal water ruled by the Moon, which means an initiating sign running on tides. It leads by looking after: making the home, holding the family, remembering what everyone needs and when. The shell is real and so is what it protects, and the two get confused by people who have only met the closed version. The constellation has the humblest origin story in the zodiac. During Heracles' fight with the hydra, Hera sent a crab to distract him, and it did what a crab could do, which was grip his foot until he crushed it. It never stood a chance and it went in anyway, and Hera set it in the sky for the attempt rather than the result. Fittingly it is the faintest constellation of the twelve, with no bright star at all, and the best thing in it is a cluster the ancients called the Manger, a soft smudge of a thousand stars that most people never notice. A Cancer is the one who notices you have gone quiet, keeps the traditions going, and turns up when things are bad. They hold grudges the way they hold everything else, carefully and for a long time. The cost is indirectness: they will show care rather than ask for it, retreat rather than say what hurt, and quietly keep score of a debt the other person never knew they had incurred.

The Dragon is the only creature in the cycle that never existed, and it is the most admired sign in it. This is scale, charisma and ambition, the animal that fills a room without effort and is expected to do something remarkable with the space. In China it is the imperial symbol and a bringer of rain, which means power and generosity are supposed to be the same gesture. Its place in the race is the best answer to why it is not first. The Dragon could fly. It should have crossed the river before anything else got wet, and when the Jade Emperor asked what had delayed it, the Dragon explained that it had passed a village suffering a drought and stopped to bring them rain, then seen a small animal struggling on a log and blown it safely to shore. That animal was the Rabbit, which finished ahead of it. The Dragon came fifth, having given away four places doing exactly what dragons are for. Dragon people are confident, generous and often genuinely lucky, and they attract expectation from the moment they arrive anywhere. They champion people and take real risks on their behalf. The cost is the altitude: pride that cannot easily admit a mistake, a low tolerance for the ordinary middle of any project, and the quiet strain of being the one everybody assumes does not need helping.
