Sphinx

“Answer correctly, or do not approach at all.”

The Sphinx is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Leo born in the Year of the Dragon, the point where the Leo sun meets the Dragon moon.

The Leo-Dragon, known as the Sphinx, is the grandest combination on the wheel and knows it. Leo brings the lion, the warmth, and an unembarrassed appetite for being at the centre. The Dragon brings myth, ambition, and a presence that fills a doorway. Nothing about this pairing is modest, and very little about it is accidental. The sphinx is a lion's body with a thinking head, and both traditions that built one gave it the same job. In Egypt it sat at the entrance, enormous and silent, guarding what was behind it. In Greece it sat on the road to Thebes and asked a question, and the travellers who could not answer did not go on. Either way the creature is a threshold: power that will not simply move aside for you, and intelligence that expects something in return for passage. Leo-Dragons are magnetic, generous to those they let through, and quietly exacting about who those are. They hold high standards, enjoy ceremony, and dislike being handled casually. They are far more thoughtful than the grandeur suggests, and they take loyalty as seriously as they take pride. The risk is the riddle: making people prove themselves at the entrance so thoroughly that only the persuasive ones ever get to the warmth behind it. The name fits because a sphinx is the lion given a mind and a purpose. It does not hunt and it does not roam. It sits at the edge of something worth guarding and asks who you are before it decides.

Leo

“Warm, unembarrassed, and better company than it is a critic.”

Leo is fixed fire and the only sign ruled by the Sun itself, which is the whole explanation. It does not orbit anything. It generates, and the warmth is genuine: Leo is generous with attention, credit, hospitality and praise, and it wants the same back without pretending otherwise. The pride is honest rather than calculated, which is why it is easier to forgive than most people expect. The constellation is the Nemean lion, whose hide no weapon could cut, which is why Heracles had to strangle it and then wore the pelt for the rest of his labours. The brightest star in it is Regulus, from the Latin for little king, one of the four royal stars the Persians used to mark the seasons, and it sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, so the Moon and the planets pass directly over it. The sky arranged a throne and then had everything else walk past it. A Leo runs the party, backs the friend who is struggling, and takes creative risks in public that other people only take in private. They are loyal, theatrical, and much more sensitive to being overlooked than to being criticised. The cost is the audience: this nature needs to be seen, and a long stretch without recognition curdles into performance, or into a hurt they will not name because naming it would be undignified.

Dragon

“Could have won it, and stopped to make it rain.”

The Dragon is the only creature in the cycle that never existed, and it is the most admired sign in it. This is scale, charisma and ambition, the animal that fills a room without effort and is expected to do something remarkable with the space. In China it is the imperial symbol and a bringer of rain, which means power and generosity are supposed to be the same gesture. Its place in the race is the best answer to why it is not first. The Dragon could fly. It should have crossed the river before anything else got wet, and when the Jade Emperor asked what had delayed it, the Dragon explained that it had passed a village suffering a drought and stopped to bring them rain, then seen a small animal struggling on a log and blown it safely to shore. That animal was the Rabbit, which finished ahead of it. The Dragon came fifth, having given away four places doing exactly what dragons are for. Dragon people are confident, generous and often genuinely lucky, and they attract expectation from the moment they arrive anywhere. They champion people and take real risks on their behalf. The cost is the altitude: pride that cannot easily admit a mistake, a low tolerance for the ordinary middle of any project, and the quiet strain of being the one everybody assumes does not need helping.

Zodiac Interplay

Polarity: Solar Noon

Both engines pointed the same way: forward.

Your solar half leans out toward the world and your lunar half pushes from behind, so there is no internal committee meeting before you act. You are the one saying "let's just go" while everyone else is still reading the reviews, and you are usually already halfway there by the time they agree.

Modality and Direction: Evergreen

You grow in every season, including the ugly ones.

Sustaining energy with eastern expansion behind it. Your progress is not dramatic, it is continuous - the compound-interest personality, quietly adding a ring a year while faster things bloom and drop.

Elemental Cycle: Lava

Molten rock. It moves, then it becomes the ground.

Solar fire carried in a lunar earth vessel. Your passion is not vapour - it cools into something you can stand on, which is why your enthusiasms leave permanent geography behind them.

Generating. Fire feeds earth. Your Leo half is the fuel and your Dragon half is what it becomes.
