Koala
“Small, indulgent, and possessed of a startling roar.”
The Koala is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Leo born in the Year of the Pig, the point where the Leo sun meets the Pig moon.
The Leo-Pig, known as the Koala, is unapologetic enjoyment with a lion somewhere inside it. Leo brings warmth, pride, and a taste for the good seat. The Pig brings sincerity, generosity, and a refusal to feel guilty about pleasure. The result is someone comfortable, loveable, and considerably more forceful than the general softness advertises. Koalas sleep up to twenty hours a day, and it is not laziness. Eucalyptus is toxic to most animals and nearly worthless as food, so the koala evolved a fermenting gut over two metres long and a metabolism slow enough to survive on it. Then there is the bellow: a male's mating call is far deeper than any animal that size should manage, produced by an extra pair of vocal folds, and it carries across the forest sounding like something enormous. Leo-Pigs are hospitable, affectionate, and content in a way that other people find either restful or infuriating. They know what they like, they keep it close, and they are much harder to shift than they look. When something they love is threatened, the volume that comes out startles everyone. The risk is the twenty hours: a life so successfully arranged around comfort that the roar rarely gets used for anything. The name fits because a koala looks like a soft toy and is running a specialised survival strategy nothing else could manage, on a diet nothing else can eat, with a voice borrowed from an animal ten times its size.

Leo
“Warm, unembarrassed, and better company than it is a critic.”
Leo is fixed fire and the only sign ruled by the Sun itself, which is the whole explanation. It does not orbit anything. It generates, and the warmth is genuine: Leo is generous with attention, credit, hospitality and praise, and it wants the same back without pretending otherwise. The pride is honest rather than calculated, which is why it is easier to forgive than most people expect. The constellation is the Nemean lion, whose hide no weapon could cut, which is why Heracles had to strangle it and then wore the pelt for the rest of his labours. The brightest star in it is Regulus, from the Latin for little king, one of the four royal stars the Persians used to mark the seasons, and it sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, so the Moon and the planets pass directly over it. The sky arranged a throne and then had everything else walk past it. A Leo runs the party, backs the friend who is struggling, and takes creative risks in public that other people only take in private. They are loyal, theatrical, and much more sensitive to being overlooked than to being criticised. The cost is the audience: this nature needs to be seen, and a long stretch without recognition curdles into performance, or into a hurt they will not name because naming it would be undignified.

Pig
“Stopped to eat, fell asleep, and finished anyway.”
The Pig closes the cycle, and it is the most contented sign in it. Generous, sincere and unembarrassed about pleasure, it gives freely, forgives quickly, and sees no virtue in being miserable on the way to anything. It is easy to underestimate and much harder to genuinely upset than most people expect. Its race is the most honest finish in the story. Partway across, the Pig got hungry, so it stopped and ate. Having eaten well, it became sleepy, so it lay down and slept. Then it woke up, remembered the race, and completed the crossing to take twelfth and final place, apparently pleased with how the day had gone. It is the only competitor whose delay was neither a strategy, an accident nor an act of kindness. It simply preferred lunch, and it still made the calendar. Pig people are warm hosts, loyal friends and the ones who feed everybody. They are honest, trusting, and better at enjoying what they have than any other sign on the wheel. The cost is the appetite in every sense: too much of the good thing, a generosity that gets quietly taken advantage of by people who have noticed how rarely it is withdrawn, and a comfort so easy to settle into that years can pass very pleasantly without much being decided.

Zodiac Interplay
Polarity: Golden Hour
Warm on the surface, watchful underneath.
You read as open, easy, generous company - and all of that is real. What people miss is that the actual deciding happens later, quietly, once you have replayed the conversation and checked it against your gut. Charm out front, careful editor in the back room.
Modality and Direction: Keystone
Remove you and the arch notices.
Sustaining energy set into northern ground. You are the load-bearing element in most rooms you are in - not the loudest presence, just the one everything else turns out to be resting on.
Elemental Cycle: Steam
Two opposites, and the result moves engines.
Solar fire against lunar water - the pairing that should cancel out and instead does work. You feel everything at high intensity and then convert it, which is why your emotions are fuel rather than weather.
Overcoming. Water checks fire. Your Pig half sets the limit and your Leo half works inside it.
