Hummingbird
“Crosses an ocean on a body that weighs nothing.”
The Hummingbird is the Ancient Zodiac sign for a Sagittarius born in the Year of the Rat, the point where the Sagittarius sun meets the Rat moon.
The Sagittarius-Rat, known as the Hummingbird, does impossible distances on excellent planning. Sagittarius brings the journey, the optimism, the conviction that the far side is worth reaching. The Rat brings resourcefulness and a sharp instinct for managing what little there is. Together they make someone quick, bright, and capable of feats that make no sense until you look at the preparation. A ruby-throated hummingbird crosses the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight, five hundred miles of open water without a place to land. It prepares by nearly doubling its body weight in fat first. Its wings beat over fifty times a second, its heart runs past a thousand beats a minute, and it can fly backwards, which nothing else with feathers manages. Every night it drops into torpor, letting its temperature crash to save the energy it cannot afford to spend sleeping. Sagittarius-Rats are fast, charming, and always preparing for something ambitious. They are cheerful under strain, canny about resources, and drawn to goals that people politely describe as unrealistic. The risk is the metabolism: living this close to the edge means a bad week is not an inconvenience, it is genuinely dangerous, and they rarely build in slack. The name fits because a hummingbird is the smallest bird there is and one of the great travellers. It looks like a jewel hovering over a flower, and it is a long-distance machine running with almost no margin at all.

Sagittarius
“Aimed at the far thing, and honest about it on the way.”
Sagittarius is mutable fire ruled by Jupiter, the sign of travel, philosophy and the unedited opinion. It wants range: more countries, more books, more arguments worth having, and it is genuinely optimistic in a way that survives evidence. The bluntness that comes with it is not unkindness, it is a nature that finds the diplomatic version slower than the true one. The archer is usually identified as Chiron, the centaur who was nothing like the rest of his kind: a scholar and physician who taught Achilles, Jason and Asclepius. Struck by an arrow that could not be healed, and immortal, he was left with a wound that would never close and no way to die of it, so he gave his immortality away and was placed in the stars. And the bow points somewhere specific. Directly behind Sagittarius lies the centre of our galaxy, so the arrow is aimed straight at the heart of everything we belong to, which no other sign can claim. A Sagittarius is the friend who tells you the truth about your relationship, arrives back from somewhere with three new obsessions, and treats a setback as material. They are generous, funny and hard to keep in one place. The cost is the arrow's flight: always aimed further out, rarely at what is in the room, and a candour that can leave real damage behind while the archer has already moved on.

Rat
“Won the race without swimming a stroke of it.”
The Rat opens the cycle, and it did not get there by being the strongest or the fastest. It got there by thinking about the problem differently from everyone else in it. This is the sign of resourcefulness, timing and quick assessment: alert to opportunity, thrifty by instinct, and comfortable in situations that reward wit over force. The story is worth telling exactly. The Jade Emperor called a race across a wide river to decide the order of the years, and the Rat, who could not swim it, persuaded the Ox to let it ride along. The Ox agreed, being the kind of animal that agrees, and swam the whole distance carrying a passenger. At the far bank, with the finish in sight, the Rat jumped from the Ox's head and landed first. Twelve years of the calendar were decided by one animal working out that the race was not actually a swimming contest. Rat people are quick, charming and highly observant, with an eye for the opening nobody else noticed and a strong instinct to provide for their own. They are excellent in a crisis and rarely without a plan. The cost is the jump: an ability to see the advantage so clearly that it gets taken before the question of whether it was fair has been given much of a hearing.

Zodiac Interplay
Polarity: Solar Noon
Both engines pointed the same way: forward.
Your solar half leans out toward the world and your lunar half pushes from behind, so there is no internal committee meeting before you act. You are the one saying "let's just go" while everyone else is still reading the reviews, and you are usually already halfway there by the time they agree.
Modality and Direction: Riverstone
Shaped by the current, still very much a stone.
Adaptable energy on northern ground. You bend to circumstance without losing your shape, which makes you the person a plan can survive contact with: you will change the route, never the destination.
Elemental Cycle: Steam
Two opposites, and the result moves engines.
Solar fire against lunar water - the pairing that should cancel out and instead does work. You feel everything at high intensity and then convert it, which is why your emotions are fuel rather than weather.
Overcoming. Water checks fire. Your Rat half sets the limit and your Sagittarius half works inside it.
